Before founding Community of Teachers, Joshua worked as a 3rd grade public school teacher in Washington, DC. During his tenure, Joshua found that his ability to create lasting and meaningful relationships with his students helped to foster a comfortable classroom environment where everyone was able to grow and to learn. Joshua successfully tested his theory that through building the confidence of his students he could then meet them where they were to strengthen their skills.
Joshua’s experience in education began long before he entered the classroom. Throughout high school and college, Joshua volunteered in a life’s skills/multiple disabilities classroom where he learned the important lesson that with hard work, dedication, and a loving team, all students can learn and have their needs met.
Pursuing his passion for education, Joshua traveled and volunteered throughout Central and South America, working with youth in Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru. Upon returning to the United States, Joshua attended American University in Washington, DC. While earning his degree in Spanish and Latin American studies, Joshua worked as an education specialist providing one-on-one individualized lessons for students aged 4-14. He focused primarily on literacy, math, and writing while always infusing confidence building into his work. Joshua also trained with the Center for Inspired Teaching in Washington, DC, where he received a certificate in K-6 education.
In all instances, Joshua found that he was never working in isolation. It was imperative that he formed relationships not only with his students, but with their parents, and the larger educational community that supports a student’s learning, as well. It is this belief, that relationships make the difference in a student’s life, which prompted Joshua to pursue his passion and start Community of Teachers. Joshua looks forward to creating powerful one-on-one relationships with students, while also building their skills and their confidence in order to help them become successful members of a larger learning community.
